First, thanks to everyone who came by last week for another great trivia showdown.  Returning to first place on an arduous night filled with needlessly complicated movie geography questions which I stuck in because I can was the Stephen Colbert SuperPAC South Carolina Primary (AKA Tuesday Heartbreak) with 90 pts, followed by Who’s on First? I’m on Vicodin with 83.  Tied for third at 78 were Italian Cruise Ship – Down De Go, and Huntsman Pulls Out; Voter Responds, I Couldn’t Even Tell You Were In.  The former won the tiebreaker and got to choose a theme round for tonight, but at least the latter won the best team name prize.

So for tonight: Speaking of that theme that those mathematicians from Italian Cruise Ship chose, it will be a round all about people missing body parts or with extra body parts (can be fingers, can be organs, whatever).  And a couple other hints for you….

Thanks to all of you who decided to risk frostbite and come down for tonight’s trivia showdown.  It was an intense competition involving tiebreakers for first and third place.  In third was M- Go Blue, who finished tied with Here Comes Santorum Claus at 69 points, but was able to name 7 states of Mexico in a minute to Santorum Claus’s 6, and earned the right to choose a theme for next week – which will be Friday Night Lights, the TV show.  And after surging from the rear on the scoreboard, Santorum Surging From the Rear tied Santorum Tops Corn Poll with 81 points.  In the one minute tiebreaker, they took first place by naming 14 Mexican states (seriously?!) to Santorum Tops Corn Poll’s 9.  And they won the best team name prize as well, which earned them a VHS copy of some of the Backstreet Boys’ finest videos that I found at my local dump when I went home for the holidays.

So thanks for coming to trivia tonight — it was great to have such a packed bar for the grand final of the fall league and thanks to those of you who stood through all 2.5 hours of it (it’ll be less time next time, without the league final pageantry and bonus rounds).  First, tonight’s results: Pulling ahead at the end and finishing first with 91 points were Tuesday Heartbreak, winners for the second week in a row, edging out Under the Frothy Mistletoe (or whatever it was your name was tonight, something like that) with 89.  In 3rd, and earning the right to choose a round for next week, was Hermaphrodite Barbie’s Final Operation with 84 points (and they have selected “1970s erotica”…so yeah, we’ll see if I can do the proper research for that round without ending up on an FBI list).  And winning this week’s best team name prize – the 1960s book “Mexico Moderno” plus the timeless 1994 VHS copy of Michael Flatley’s Riverdance for Rwanda - was F*ck You Hermaphrodite Barbie.

Which brings me to the league standings – tonight’s scores, when added to half the points each team earned throughout the 3 months or so of this league, decided the champion.  And by that formula, Tuesday Heartbreak, with 120.5, has once again won the Stetsons Pub Quiz League, and gets a private party upstairs with a $350 tab.  Congratulations, guys!  Coming in second – and still in it for much of the evening, was Dead Meat, who stumbled at the end and finished with 103.5, followed by 3rd place Frothy Mixtures with 101, 4th place Hermaphrodite Barbie with 94, and 5th place Herman Cain/Rick Perry/Chris Christie with 88.5 (they won a free Mickey Mouse backpack for their efforts).  As consolation prizes, I gave teams 2-4 the right to choose wacky themes for next week’s quiz.  So be warned:

Thanks to Dead Meat: we will have a theme round on DC Comics and I will be required to refer to the Roman Emperor Otho at least once in each round.

So, last week was a good tough round of trivia, with Dead Meat/Pikachu Is My Speechwriter just edging out Tuesday Heartbreak in the final round, winning 86-83 and taking home the $50 tab.  In third was the Frothy Mixtures with 76 (who chose Dinosaurs in Pop Culture and Fiction as the theme for round 5 in addition to picking up 3 league points), edging out something like Dr Pepper is the Best Thing that Has Happened to Me (ok, I don’t remember the exact wording of your name, my bad) by a point.  Best team name (with a bonus league point apiece plus comedy show tickets) was divided between F*ck American Crossroads and Hermaphrodite Barbie Replaced Ben Affleck with Mehrun as Her Celebrity Crush (let’s not get into that…).  So the league standings, first:

Of course, as I’ve mentioned all along, tonight is the grand final of our Fall League for 2011 at Stetsons, and the winning team will win honor as well as a free party in the upstairs barroom plus a $350 tab.  I’ll be giving out consolation prizes, largely designed to give you an advantage in a future trivia night (think along the lines of the current  honor that goes to the 3rd place team each week) to teams near the top when all is done tonight.  And as I’ve mentioned, the format for the league final is as follows – the weekly prizes will be the same as always – $50 off your alc tab for first, $25 for second.  But the final scores from tonight will be added to half the league points your team has – see above, divided by two – to determine the final league standings.  Yes, Tuesday Heartbreak has a good lead there, but if Dead Meat can win by 8 points – something they certainly could do on a good night – they could take the title away from the defending league champs.  And hey, Frothy Mixtures could, I guess, maybe beat them by 18?  Less likely but still a chance.  In fact, anyone coming off the street could theoretically win it.  So come, get ready for a showdown — there will be plenty of points on the board – there will be a 20 point handout round and I’m adding in a bonus mini-round worth a max of 5 points half-way through as well – so you can make your move to the top.
